The following pub and brewery news was reported at the May 2022 Committee Meeting held in the Fawn Club, Greenbank.

Pub News

There is very little pub news to report this month, other than the fact that most pubs are still facing difficulties with the ongoing situation wrt the covid pandemic and sector confidence. Drakes Wine Bar & Cafe Tavistock, has closed. The Red & Black Club, also in Tavistock, will be holding a beer festival later in the year (date TBC). Seymour Arms Greenbank, is under new management – good luck to the new managers. Eighteen87 Laira Bridge, is being advertised as For Sale. The Roam Tap Jubilee Beer Festival, to be held over the Jubilee Bank Holiday, will feature a collaboration brew with Ivybridge Brewing Co. The Providence Greenbank, now have a house beer named Beyze, ABV 4.5%, brewed by Bridgetown of Totnes. The Ivybridge Brewery Tap, Ivybridge, has opened.

Drake's Drinker Magazine

The latest edition of the branch magazine can be found by clicking on the Drake's Drinker Magazine link. These can now be viewed onscreen or downloaded to your device.

Beer Scoring

During the period from 12th April 2021 to 30th April 2022, 80 CAMRA members submitted a total of 2238 beer scores for 125 different pubs in our Branch Area. Nineteen Plymouth branch members submitted 1940 beer scores, with 298 scores submitted by 62 members of 40 other branches when they visited our branch area – Thank You all very much!

Beer Scoring informs the Branch that those particular named pubs are open and serving cask conditioned real ale (or not, if zero scored). It also helps us to monitor the quality and consistency of the real ales available, and to help keep What Pub as up-to-date as possible.

Cider News

Thatchers and Weston’s cider are no longer considered real cider by the CAMRA Real Ale, Cider and Perry Campaigns Committee.

Plymouth CAMRA LocAle Scheme

There are currently 70 establishments listed as being accredited to the Plymouth CAMRA LocAle Scheme. These are listed on the branch website.

CAMRA Member Discount Scheme and CAMRA Voucher Scheme

There are currently 21 establishments listed as being members of the CAMRA Member Discount Scheme, and a further nine which are part of the CAMRA Voucher Scheme, making 30 in total. Please give these pubs your support if/when you go out! These are listed on the branch website.

The Pubs Officer will update on any known Planning Applications at the AGM.

Cask Marque Accreditation

The George Toby Carvery Roborough, and the Burrator Inn Dousland, have gained Cask Marque Accreditation recently. The Eagle, City Centre, is no longer CM accredited.

Brewery News

The planning application previously reported for Pilgrimage Brewery is progressing, and Sam now has the keys for that address. Roam will be holding a Jubilee weekend beer festival at the Roam Brewery Tap in Peverell. Please see Roam Tap Jubilee Beer Festival for details.

Beer Festival News

The SIBA Maltingsfest 2022 beer festival 2022 took place as usual at Osbourne Park near Tucker’s Maltings, Teign Road, Newton Abbot TQ12 4AA from Thursday 21st April until Saturday 23rd April 2022. There was a lot of seating space both inside the marquees and outside on the green. Over 200 beers, ciders and gin were available, with food options supplied by the Real Meat Sausage Co, of Exeter, with a wide variety of meat, vegetarian and vegan-friendly options available.

The Horse & Groom Spring Beer Festival 2022 Bittaford, took place to help Ollie celebrate 20 years as licensee at the pub and was very successful – congratulations to Ollie and his family!

The South Devon CAMRA Sunshine Beer Festival 2022 will take place at Teignmouth RFC from Thursday 21st until Saturday 23rd July 2022.

The Walkhampton Inn, Walkhampton, have announced several Ale and Cider festivals are due to take place this year, in June Walkhampton Inn Queen's Jubilee Ale Festival 2022 and August Walkhampton Inn Sausage and Cider Festival 2022. A successful Easter beer festival was also held earlier in April, see Walkhampton Inn Easter Ale & Cider Festival 2022 for details of what you missed!

The Prince Maurice Cider Festival 2022 Eggbuckland, will take place from Friday 6th May until Sunday 8th May 2022. Homemade food and live entertainment will be available.

The Roam Tap Jubilee Beer Festival will take place from Wednesday 1st until Saturday 4th June 2022.

The Great British Beer Festival 2022 returns to Olympia and runs from Tuesday 2nd until Saturday 6th August 2022.

The charity festival, Abbfest 2022, also makes a welcome return, and runs from Friday 16th until Sunday 18th September 2022.
