Pub and Brewery News - June 2016

Wednesday 1 June 2016

The following pub and brewery news was reported at the branch social meeting on Wednesday 1st June 2016.

The CAMRA Discount Scheme enables pubs to promote their business to our members and hopefully encourage more trade. The discount given will be advertised free of charge in our branch magazine, Drake’s Drinker, as well as on this website CAMRA Discount Scheme and the National CAMRA website. We can also provide posters to advertise the offer to visitors. If you are the licensee of a pub and are interested of taking part in this scheme, please contact our Pubs Campaigns Coordinator, Andy Richardson, at ku.gro.armac.htuomylp@swenbup

The pub discount information has been notified to Plymouth CAMRA and is given in good faith, but is liable to change at short notice. Some discounts may be modified or restricted when special promotions are on offer.

Pub News

Tavistock Inn, Tavistock, has reopened, after a major refurbishment saw the pub with a completely new Victorian look on the inside, serving excellent food and three ales (Dartmoor Jail Ale, Sharp’s Doom Bar and Otter Bitter), and has a new publican, Tony; unfortunately, the Voodoo Lounge, City Centre, and King’s Head Tavern, Bretonside, one of the oldest pubs in Plymouth, are both closed and boarded up; Mary Tavy Inn has had a large conversion in the bar; Steve, bar manager at the Royal Oak, Meavy, has left for pastures new – we would like to wish him well for the future; Boringdon Arms, Turnchapel, is due to reopen on Friday 3rd June at 1800, after major refurbishment - good luck to the new tenants; and the lease for the Morley Arms, Laira Bridge, is for sale. It is understood by Plymouth CAMRA that applications for listing as Asset's of Community Value have been submitted to local councils for the Golden Hind, Mannamead; King's Head Tavern, Bretonside, Boringdon Arms, Turnchapel and Leaping Salmon, Horrabridge. Beer Festivals will take place at Plymstock Albion Oaks RFC 1st to 3rd July; and the Sausage and Cider Festival at the Clovelly Bay Inn, Turnchapel on Friday 10th and Sat 11th June: see Local Beer Festivals page for further details.

Brewery News.

We are aware of the following new breweries close to our branch area: Camel Brewing Company, on Bodmin Moor; Checkstone Brewery, brewing in the First and Last Inn, Church Street, Exmouth; Stargazer Brewing, Petrockstowe, Okehampton; Tin Miner’s Brewery, Truro; and Woodbury Ales, Woodbury Salterton, Exeter. Slightly further afield in the region, we know that Beat Ales have started up in Bristol; as have King Street Brew House, sister to James Street Brewery, also in Bristol.

We would like to wish all new brewers and publicans all the very best in their new ventures.
